The artist from this week's show that I'm going to highlight, is the lovely lady pictured above, Toronto's very own Esthero. Fans of her underground 1998 gem, Breath From Another, all collectively rejoiced once it was announced that her follow-up, Wikked Lil Grrrls, would finally be released this summer after a long 7 year absence. Esthero was lucky enough to survive the folding of The Work Group label and find a home with Reprise to deliver one of the best surprises of the year. Wikked Lil Grrrls is more varied in its scope than Breath and expands on the eclecticism that was hinted at in songs like "That Girl" and "Heavensent." There is no way you could get a clear idea of the album with only a few songs, so the ones I'm posting will focus purely on the lounge pop side of the album. "Bad Boy Clyde" is the kind of sad tale that gets told over and over again: nice girl falls for bad boy. Esthero's voice makes all the difference, adding a deep forlorn resonance to the mood that makes you feel sorry for the nice girl in the tale for once. Those horn arrangements get ya blue too. "Everyday Is A Holiday (With You)" features Sean Lennon on guitar and keys along with some of his textbook indie pop flair and some 70's AOR for extra smiles. It will brighten your day instantly.
